See what our participants said about Fatpacking

After every trip (and countless blisters) I'm coming back for more.

Kasia B

Having completed two Fatpacking trips, I am pleased to report that consistent weight the first trip the second was well-staffed and the other hikers were extremely collegial. The difficulty level was manageable by all, and the itinerary was well thought out. Love the hikes.

George M

Love [the guides] who did so much and with such grace! [They] fed me and made sure I was tucked in at bedtime! Hot coffee to wake me up, Advil for my pains, and a pat on the back every night! … Thanks for everything, I will never forget this trip!

Cat T

Fatpacking absolutely knows what they are talking about when it comes to being prepared with the right equipment. The guides are obviously knowledgeable and both were pushy at the right times (drink your water) and laid back and understanding at the right time (pushing me through a melt-down and then relaxing and not mentioning it around dinner).

Suzie L

I came ... expecting to ... maybe be left in the dust because I'd be too slow; I experienced none of that.

Joi S

Thank you for having this organization. I feel lucky that I stumbled upon it.

At age 63 I have accomplished much in my life. This is high on my list.

Terrence R

My third trip with Fatpacking did not disappoint. Once we escaped the sound of gun fire, it was nice and quiet. Another fun trip.

Paul Y

Everything that was promised came to be: the trip was exactly as described. Maybe that seems like a simple thing, but you can't always rely on someone following through with what they advertise.

Jane P

This was a wonderful trip and challenge. I enjoyed it immensely, the guides, the philosophy and the country.

Steve M

The trip was pure joy and relaxation! If you would like to unplug for few days from your everyday life, that's the way to do it. No stress, no clients, no bills to pay, no judgments - just you and nature.

Kasia B

I recommend Fatpacking to anyone who needs a change of scenery -- especially what they see in the mirror. I felt so much better about myself after 7 days of hiking, and it got me out of the habit of eating after dinner. Now I tell my husband, 'I can't eat any more tonight. They've already hung up the bear bag.' I've actually been able to keep off the weight I lost on the hike.

Sharon B

I had great experience being a first timer and I would definitely do more trips with Fatpacking.

SANJEEV G

I've lost over 30lb and made friends all over the country that I've hiked and backpacked with.

Alexander W

I really do feel pampered while Fatpacking. The little things really do count like friendliness, humor, encouragement and feeling like I fit in.

Marjie F

Fatpacking gave me a great incentive to lose weight and get in shape before the Mt. Ranier trip. The trip itself was challenging both physically and mentally. The scenery was beautiful. I will always remember sleeping out under the stars.

Paul Y

The scenery in Sequoia/Kings Canyon was far beyond anything I had imagined. The group was very supportive and friendly and I would definitely consider signing up for another trip.

Randall F

I came away feeling proud of myself. I had accomplished something worthwhile.

Kindra W

Fatpacking sets a challenging goal, and then does everything possible to help you achieve it. This was my first backpacking experience, and each day I would think 'This is really busting my butt', only to end each night with the satisfaction that I had done what I had set out to do. And that was possible only because of the leadership, planning, and guidance that Fatpacking provides.

Steve S

Going on a trip with a spouse v. solo had absolutely no impact on the quality of my experience, in case anyone else inquires about the same. I thought it might be very different, but it was not.

Roberta S

I knew this hike would be a challenge, but I wanted to push myself, and I did it! It was tough, but such a rewarding experience! I'm doing it again!

Cat T

I've learned that I prefer the isolation of the wilderness to the convenience of checking email and the distraction of road noise.

Marc D

There aren't any good chairs in nature.

John M

The Fatpacking guides made the hike from Monson to Mt. Kathadin into an incredibly memorable experience. If I had hiked by myself, I would have driven myself insane with over-thinking all the little details like "where should I stop for the night?" and "how much water should I carry?" Having experienced guides who could answer these and many other questions allowed me to focus on the natural beauty, the fun of hiking, and the more important questions, like "What kind of bar do I want for a snack?

Julia P

... an awesome experience. I already miss the woods and the peacefulness that comes with it.

Dawn A

Overall it is a stress free wonderful experience. I especially enjoy that it caters to many levels of fitness and a wide range of ages.

Brandy F

Climbing Mount Washington was physically the most difficult thing I have ever done. The Guides] set the right combination of pushiness and support for me to reach the summit. I would never have been able to achieve it on my own.

Roger P

I schedule the rest of my vacation time AFTER I have booked my Fatpacking trips for the year. I only wish I would have found Fatpacking years ago.

Jim G

I wanted to lose weight, but not like that. Oh, not like that. (Participant got food poisoning pre-trip)

Richard K

Each Fatpacking trip I have done has been an awesome experience. But even better are the friends I've made while sweating miles with people I've never met. For this out-of-shape, 40 something guy (pushing 50), I am hooked. [The Guides] do a great job and I am already thinking about my next adventure.

I could not have choosen a better way to spend quality time with my son. The experience was life changing. Go Fatpacking!!!.

Jim H

The Sedona Fatpacking experience allowed me to check off one of the items on my bucket list. I enjoyed the hikes and the overall camping experience. I'm looking forward to my next Fatpacking hike.

Cheryl T

Best guided hiking experience imaginable. Steve answered all my questions, Maxie was an amazing guide. I would go anywhere I was fit enough to hike if he lead another trip even if it was to Mt. Doom lol

Hannah K

Mt. Rainier and the diversity of terrain we covered gave this trip a magical feel. This feeling, along with the relationship developed among [the group] made for a rewarding and memorable experience.

George W

Fourth Fatpacking trip in 13 months! I guess you can say that I've caught the bug.

Roberta S

I think it is so cool that Fatpacking attacts a wide range of participants. It doesn't matter if you are a counter person at McDonald's, or an ortho surgeon. No one asks and no one really cares. Everyone is accepted for who they are. It's fun to have a wide range of ages/backgrounds.

Mary K

It's great on the trail. Your mind clears and you forget about that 'To Do' list that constantly nags at your guilty conscience when you are trying to relax at home!

Kim J

I hadn't done any wilderness backpacking in over 20 years. I loved my trip. The guides were great, food was good, the trip was well planned, and the scenery was beautiful. I'll do another trip next year!

Mike S

I laughed, I cried, It was the best show I've seen in years.

Fatpacking was just what I was looking for. I plan to take several solo hikes in the Smokies this year and now I feel more confident in doing that.

Steve R

My second Fatpacking trip was every bit as memorable as my first. Joshua Tree was great fun. I could not have had a better or more adventurous time.

Paul Y

I would highly recommend the experience for anyone who wants to strengthen mind, body and spirit.

Fatpacking is by far the best guide service I have ever used. The guides are excellent and knowledgeable. If I were to go with any guide service again it would be with Fatpacking.

Alexander H

In reading and planning for the trip, I seem to have skipped over the fact that the meals would be vegetarian. I hadn't gone without meat for more than two days in my entire adult life, but was pleasantly surprised with the culinary adventure.

Dan S

My first backpacking trip ever was a fantastic experience with Fatpacking. The organization and knowledge about life on the trail was excellent. By day 2 it felt as if I've been backpacking and hiking my whole life. The transition was made very easy with the Fatpacking guides' endless patience for answering any and all questions. I would highly recommend Fatpacking to anyone who is considering a first backpacking trip or for an experienced backpacker who enjoys well organized trips.

Paul D

I had a wonderful time on the Redwoods trip. I recommend it highly to anyone who wants to get back into backpacking - as I did, after retiring last year - or to try it. Our guide was fantastic, the country covered beautiful, and I thoroughly enjoyed the company of the other hikers.

Lois T

[The guides] were extremely helpful, knowlegdeable, and helped me realize that I can do more than I ever thought I could. I left tired, but energized at the same time. I wanted to go out and hike again as soon as I got back home!

Felicia C

My Fatpacking adventure was everything it promised to be, except better!

Richard G

I love the variety of trips. I absolutely love getting away from it all and discovering amazing places! The waterfall hike at Camp Ondessonk was one of the most beautiful places on earth I have ever seen.

Marjie F

If you've never done this before, you'll wonder why you waited so long to try.

Hasan G

Fatpacking trips are challenging and outside of my usual comfort zone, but so rewarding. I have experienced and accomplished things I've never thought I'd ever do or be able to do.

Michelle S

This was my first experience ever backpacking It was one of the hardest things I've ever done since we don't have mountains (or even hills) in Florida. [The Guide] was amazing. He could definitely write multiple books about The Smokies. I would do it again and recommend Fatpacking to others.

Tina F

I forgot how much I loved being in the mountains. Weight loss, although it did happen, felt secondary.

Alexandra A

I emerged from Arizona's Four Peaks Wilderness with improved confidence, lighter, stronger (mentally and physically), and with memories that will be with me forever. I can't wait to go on my next trip!

Amanda B

This is my 6th year Fatpacking and I am an official member of the 'over the hill club' (well past 50, gray, fat and bald). So now it takes me a little longer to get up and down the mountains, but that just gives me more time to enjoy the views and the experience. The guides are always patient and always first class. I have lost weight and inches on every trip. I have also met lots of great people and made lots of great friends. If you are past your 40's, don't be intimidated. Advil fixes the aches and Fatpacking does wonders for your spirit.

Roger J

Fatpacking offers a true adventure experience, backed up by the support, encouragement and humor of a great set of guides. It's hard to really get back to nature and mentally reset in our hectic world, but Fatpacking delivered. I am already planning my next trip for some time later this year.

Jim B

I passed my fit test for the Air Force on Sunday! I could not have done it without the Fatpacking trip. I lost enough in my waist and improved my Cardio so much my Air Force bs was shocked when I passed.

Tom D

I enjoyed Isle Royale and how helpful the guides were when I could not finish the hike.

Janette J

I love this organization. I love backpacking and hiking, but don't know enough about planning food, or feel safe enough to do it on my own. This allows me the perfect balance of a full experience and very little planning!

Elisa W

I lost 250 pounds after having weight loss surgery a number of years ago. One of the things that I wanted to do, but couldn't when I was heavy, was backpack. Now that I am physically able to backpack, Fitpacking provides a phenomenal service. Not only are their trips fun and a source of exercise, but having a trip on my calendar is a motivator (and something I look forward to).

Jim G

Fatpacking works! I gained confidence in my physical abilities and lost weight in the process!

Jane P

Fatpacking helped me feel ten years younger and stronger!

My 2nd trip with Fatpacking was just as memorable as the first. I truly feel 'de-stressed'. Although I feel confident with the skills I have learned to do a solo trip, I think I would really miss the cameraderie of the people that Fatpacking attracts. I can hardly wait to sign up for another trip!

Mary K

Fatpacking was a great way to experience backpacking for the first time or as a return from a hiatus. The guides were concerned with making sure we had a great time. If you are thinking about booking with them stop thinking and just do it. A great time awaits and Fatpacking will take care of your concerns and needs to the highest level of satisfaction.

Michael W

My knee became sore/swollen. The guides went out of their way to accomodate my injury, took a different route, and stayed with me til I boarded the Ferry.

A really really good time. Lots of laughs + lots of miles. I'll definitely do this again!

Cristina T

[The Guide] was like a good bartender - around when you need him but still gave you your space.

Dave B

Be prepared to gain more than just fitness on your trip. In this world where we are connected 24/7 to information and technology overload, it was just deeply fulfilling and a blessing to laugh and enjoy the fruits of each others' spirits. The hike itself was challenging and offered stunning scenery. It was indescribably wonderful to leave the sounds of alarms, cars, email pings, and demands on time and attention for the sound of the rain on my tent, a babbling creek running right behind my tent, and the leaves rustling in the breeze. To do this under the guidance of two kind, gentle and knowledgeable souls was a gift and a privilege.

Dawn C

. I actually think a valuable service that Fatpacking provides is the opportunity for people with no experience back-packing to go out with people who do have experience and who will be looking out for the inexperienced participant.

Dawn V

I lost 22lbs in a week, I completed one of the most dangerous hikes in the USA, I had a great time, I forgot about work and proved to myself it is never to late to get started. I so much look forward to my next trip.

My third trip with Fatpacking was just as memorable as the first two. I will be back for another trip!

Mary K

Fatpacking is truly an intergrated travel company that provides challenging and rewarding visits into America's backcountry that few folks get to see. Fatpacking excels from affordability, pre-trip communication, and having well prepared trail guides for participants knowledge and safety. I highly recommend this fine group.

Scott S

Fatpacking has provided a delightful structure for improving my hiking capabilities and techniques. The guides are fun and very helpful, and the whole experience is very rewarding. Not to mention the awe-inspiring scenery!

Peak experience! Don't be shy, plus 55's! You can do this!

Marjie F

My wife and I had the most amazing experience of our lives, aside from the births of our three children and one grandchild, in the Superstition Wilderness with [guides]. They were an awesome team, and we had a blast. It was grueling at times, but their presence made all the difference in the world. And we REALLY enjoyed the hot camp food for breakfast and lunch every day!

Rodney L

I am also pleased with the physical improvements to my body. I went down about 1.5 pant sizes and] also grew stronger on the trail.

That week on the Appalachian Trail will always be on my 'count on one hand' list of best experiences. I learned to slow down and give myself a little slack. The simplicity of the long trudges, as well as the complexity of the climbs fed my soul. I even shed a demon or two along the way. I am more connected to life now because of that hike.

Julia P

This is a great service to get people (like me) backpacking in nature who may not otherwise have the confidence or skills to do it on their own!

Karen O

Hiking with Steve and his crew is a great way to get fit and see fantastic scenery close up and personal - much better than looking at photos while walking a treadmill!

Fatpacking is a rare find in a world of vacation travel awash with gimmicky bonuses and pampering treats. This is back to basics where you check out of everyday living and check in to what nature has to offer.

Recipe for a great hiking trip:"

Knowledgeable guides
Best trails with awesome views
Good food

[The Guides] were great. Thorough, knowledgable, accomodating, and I definitely got my money's worth. Almost 60 miles in 7 days with awesome views and a thorough workout, plus plenty of good food to eat.

My Fatpacking experience was the greatest. Spending time among the buffalo, elk and prairie dogs was amazing. There's no better feeling than the bond you feel with others who have just shared the experience of walking all day through the wilderness. Hot, tired, exhausted and exhilirated.

John M

Exploring the majestic wilderness while losing weight, forming friendships, and learning survival skills is part of the experience, but self-discovery, personal introspecti increased self-esteem and just plain old self satisfaction are added benefits.

Paula S

Finishing this hiking trip and hearing at least one wolf call were my main goals. Well, I achieved those two and SO much more - moose sightings, loon sightings and calls, osprey, immature Bald Eagle, beaver, multitude of flowering plants (including the beautiful pitcher plant), snowshoe hare, luna moths, all types of butterflies...pretty fantastic! But it really was the wolf howls at 1:00 am that did it for me! Very successful trip - thank you!

Suzanne C

I would recommend Fatpacking for anyone who wants to experience the outdoors, challenge themselves, yet have the rewards of having another cook for you & losing weight/getting fit along the way.

Cindy M

I may never backpack like this again...but I am soooo glad and proud that I accomplished this.

Christine P

The sense of community, encouragement, compassion, and support that developed is one that is rarely exercised in our daily lives. Perhaps more rewarding than a shift in BMI is the courage, confidence, and strength of character that was developed on the trail.

Shirley C

I was surprised just how much fun I had. I thought it would be a higher ratio of misery to fun. Instead, the whole experience was great. I loved the other people, the island was fantastic, and even the heat was bearable. I liked that we had time in camp to swim in the lakes and hang out. I liked the fact that the guides were helpful and supportive.

Ann S

I love the experience of 'earning' a view. Hiking for miles to get to a place very few people will ever see is something I treasure.

There were significant spiritual rewards as well: the contemplation of remoteness, timelessness, natural beauty, fragility and self-sufficiency.

Marc D

Cindy M

Rainier was my 3rd Fatpacking trip in 3 years. In each instance the itinerary was well suited to my ability and the guides cheerfully managed the pace to match the varied abilities of each participant so we all got to the end of each day in good spirits.

A great experience--beautiful location, good exercise, fine for first-time camping/backpacking because the guides were so knowledgable and helpful.

Barbara R

I participated in the Redwoods trip originally to accede to my husband's wish for me to accompany him. I did not think backcountry backpacking would be for me. I realized early on the first day that I was WRONG. It turned out that the previously dreaded accommodations did not bother me, and hiking in such beautiful and unforgettable locations was an opportunity I was privileged to have.

Mary-Louise P

I had the most amazing time in the Smokey Mountains with Steve and Bruce. I was so out of shape I was ready to quit after the first mile, but Steve and Bruce inspired me to hike forward and by the end of the week I accomplished so much physically!
